One of the benefits of painting commissioned work is that it often takes me to places I’ve never been, where I get to make new friends.
I’d walked along the Gallatin River on a trip to Big Sky, Montana more than thirty years past, but I’d never had the opportunity to explore it or cast a fly on it.
Recently, a fellow decided that a painting of his partner fishing the Gallatin River would make a perfect retirement gift, and he contacted me about it. Of course, I was honored to accept the commission, and preparations were made for me to travel to Big Sky and meet the subject of the painting. We spent three delightful days on the river together and I photographed and sketched him while he fished. This painting now hangs in his home and I’ve no doubt that we’ll fish together again sometime in the future.
