My favorite thing about painting for John Gierach’s essays is collecting the necessary reference material from which to work. It’s no accident that this often includes the two of us spending time on the water together. Whether it’s nearby, or at some distant and remote location, we always seem to have a wonderful time. I’ve lost track of the places we’ve fished, from Colorado to Alaska, and many points in between.
This image of John carefully releasing a trout is a companion piece to the painting, “Close to Home” which illustrated our one-hundredth collaboration in Fly Rod & Reel magazine. Both paintings record several lovely days we shared on a small mountain stream, near John’s home in Colorado.
