Finding New Meaning in Norman Maclean
It’s safe to say that I don’t have many friends who haven’t read Norman Maclean’s masterwork triptych, “A River Runs Through It and Other Stories”. Like many of my friends, I’ve read it multiple times, as well as his second book, “Young Men and Fire”, which was published posthumously. Regardless, as if it’s new, every time I read Maclean’s work I seem to rediscover the magic of his prose.
Recently, our dear friend Elliott sent us a copy of “Norman Maclean – A Life of Letters and Rivers”, written by Rebecca McCarthy and invited us to a small gathering where we had the opportunity to meet Rebecca, and listen to her stories about growing up with Norman; she eventually became his student, friend, and protege. It was a delightful evening and her fine work has added a rich and entirely new layer of meaning to the experience of reading Norman Maclean’s work.
Friend, poet, and writer Larry Gavin reviewed the book in “A review of the book about the guy who wrote the book on fly fishing”.
