This was the very first painting I did of a fisherman gently holding his spent quarry; admiring it one last moment before returning it to the river. I wanted to capture the tension in the fisherman’s wrist and hand while portraying the resigned dignity of the brown trout waiting for release.
This painting was the inspiration of an entire series of images I created, titled “One Last Look”.
As the fish was slowly lowered into the water to revive before swimming away, my fisherman commented, “Butter… what a stick of butter!”
The original watercolor hangs in a collector’s home. The image is now available as a signed and numbered limited edition print. It’s a very small edition of just 20 prints, and each comes with an original pencil drawing of the fly of your choice in the extra-large margin.
